Florian Borstlap (Tiel 1983) is an artist and
officer on large commercial vessels. Since graduating from the Willem de
Kooning Academy in 2010, he combines these two careers.
The work of Borstlap develops itself around
its umbrella project 'The Entity or ZOON', a mythology fabricated by himself. Driven
by a Utopian desire, he enters a relationship between reality and fantasy. Reflecting
playfully on religion, hegemony and social structures, a framework is created on
which he symbolizes and references his quest for the implementation of his
desires. The so-called 'ZOON' is the central figure in this mythology. It acts as a self-referencing
symbol by which meanings change or new ones emerge. Borstlap’s creations are very
detailed and executed with fine precision. They find their roots in various
disciplines including ceramics, drawing, architecture, installations and
performance art.
Borstlap: "I
see it as my task to dream about a better world. The negative response to a
Utopian or Fantast is fleeting, while true solutions always lay hidden in
Utopias. Many people glorify science in hope of finding answers to our
problems, but in a systematic and objective process ideas may not be conceived
with knowledge that does not yet exist. Art makes it possible -as opposed to
science- to think free as a fantast and should -in my opinion- manifest itself
that way. Is not this art that which underlies a good idea? After all, art is at
the forefront. It’s goal akin to that of science.
The
foundations of what we now call ‘civilization’, was once coined by unworldly
Utopians. My utopian desires are no ‘unrealistic dreams’. They are ‘unworldly
catalytic converters’.
It will be my life’s work".
Florian Borstlap (Tiel 1983) is beeldend kunstenaar en stuurman op de grote handelsvaart. Sinds zijn afstuderen aan de Willem de Kooning academie in 2010, combineert hij deze twee carrières.
Het werk van Borstlap ontwikkeld zich rondom zijn overkoepelend project: ‘ The Entity of ZOON’, een zelf verzonnen mythologie. Gedreven door utopische verlangens gaat hij een relatie aan tussen realiteit en fantasie. Door op speelse wijze te reflecteren aan religies, hegemonie en sociale structuren, ontstaat er een kader waaraan hij zijn zoektocht naar de implementatie van zijn verlangens symboliseert en refereert. Het zogenaamde ‘ZOON-figuur' staat centraal in deze mythologie. Het fungeert als een zelf refererend symbool waarmee betekenissen veranderen of nieuwe ontstaan. Borstlap's 'scheppingen' zijn zeer gedetailleerd en met uiterste precisie uitgevoerd. Zij vinden hun oorsprong in diverse disciplines waaronder keramiek, tekenkunst, architectuur, installaties en performance-kunst.
Borstlap: “Ik ben het als mijn taak gaan zien, te dromen van een betere wereld. De negatieve weerklank van een Utopist of Fantast is bederfelijk, terwijl juist oplossingen altijd in Utopieën verscholen liggen. Veel mensen verheerlijken de wetenschap in de hoop een antwoord te vinden op onze problemen, maar in een systematisch en objectief proces mogen geen ideeën bedacht worden met kennis die nog niet bestaat. Kunst maakt het mogelijk -in tegenstelling tot de wetenschap- vrij te denken als een fantast en dit moet -wat mij betreft- ook zo tot uiting komen. Is het niet deze kunst die ten grondslag ligt aan een goed idee? Kunst is immers een voorhoede, doelmatig gelijk aan die van de wetenschap.
De fundamenten van wat wij nu 'beschaving' noemen zijn ooit bedacht door wereldvreemde utopisten. Mijn utopische verlangens zijn geen ‘onverwezenlijkbare dromen’. Het zijn ‘wereldvreemde katalysatoren’…
Dit zal mijn levenswerk wel worden”.
